Chalk It Up

This morning I experimented with my first wedding related craft. I’ve been keen on the idea of using chalkboards for various purposes on our wedding day. It seems fitting considering our reception is being held at an old schoolhouse. I’ve searched endlessly online and in a few stores. Chalkboards of a reasonable size are not cheap. I needed to think of a way to make them more affordable. I finally decided to make miscellaneous items LOOK like chalkboards using black craft paint and a white paint marker.

I bought this small platter at the Dollar Tree.

2. I added two coats of black craft paint (Side note: I have the HARDEST time waiting for paint to dry.)

3. I used a white paint marker to draw my design. I decided that this particular platter would be displayed on the cake table during the reception.

I think it turned out pretty cute. I will be hitting up garage sales, Goodwill and the Dollar Tree in the coming weeks to find more $1 treasures to transform into faux chalkboards. Let me know if you have any ideas.
